Launch of Sew Haute Couture Blog

A beautiful piece of fabric has inspired me for spring. I love warm colors -- orange, chartreuse, and ivory. I'll try to post pictures of my draping and design as I progress!
Can I say how much I love Kara Janx of Project Runway Season 2? Her kimono dress is available on her web site. The cut, the look on the models, the drape! It's only 200 bucks! I am jonesing to purchase the black with green version. Or, I'll try and drape and design a similar dress myself.

Welcome!

Hi I'm Tasha! I am an aspiring fashion designer as well. I would love information on pattern design. I can alter patterns but would realy love to beef up the skills in designing my own patterns from scratch! I like to design evening wear and bridal wear mostly but have been know to stitch up a pair of pants for myself just before going to the club! I will visit often and hope to offer as much to this blog as possible! Sew on ya'll :)

My favorite beginner's books for pattern design are rather old by Adele P. Margolis published in the early 1970s, the techniques are still the same, but she goes into some detail into how to transform one pattern into another. The second level of pattern design is to use university level textbooks. Check your local library for books, they should have at least one or two. The other great thing for learning to design your own patterns is to look at the basic block pieces (Bodice Front, Bodice Back, Skirt Front, Skirt Back, Pants Front, Pants Back, Sleeve) and see how various patterns that have already been designed transform these basic pieces. Draping patterns is an entirely different matter and requires practice rather than book learning.
